Conference Presenters

Richard C. Gershon, PhD

Vice Chair of Research, Professor, Department of Medical Social Sciences, Northwestern University

In response to the realization that the outcomes tools he was using in clinical practice were outdated and failed to cover the needs of his patients, Dr. Gershon's career has increasingly focused on the development of modern assessment tools. He strives to find new ways to assess outcomes of treatment and methodologies and share this information with clinicians in a manner that can immediately impact treatment. Dr. Gershon serves as PI for the NIH Toolbox for the Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function, where he coordinated a team of 235 researchers from around the world to create a battery of instruments for clinical investigators to assess areas within cognitive, motor, sensory, and emotional health, for longitudinal, clinical, and comparative effectiveness research. He serves as MPI for the NIA sponsored grant Advancing Reliable Measurement in Alzheimer's Disease and cognitive Aging (ARMADA), which validates the NIH Toolbox amongst Alzheimer's populations and older age groups. As MPI for the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) PRO Measurement Core, Dr. Gershon and his team recommend, develop, and curate assessment delivery for over 80 sites. He also serves as PI on the recently awarded NIH Infant and Toddler Toolbox (aka Baby Toolbox) contract that seeks to develop a cognitive assessment battery for infants and children aged 1-42 months. In his former role as PI for the NIH Roadmap Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Technical Center, Dr. Gershon served as technology host for more than 2,000 researchers and clinicians who were registered users of AssessmentCenter.net, a test authoring and study administration portal. This work continues through his oversight of the Assessment Center API, which enables the delivery of PROMIS measures for Epic hospitals, 40 other EMRs, and individual institutions worldwide. Dr. Gershon's background is further augmented by his role as a co-investigator and/or consultant on over 100 assessment development projects in health care, education, and certification. In the outcomes arena he has been a part of 85 competitive presentations, given 55 invited presentations, 46 workshops, and authored 115 peer-reviewed papers.

Elizabeth M. Dworak, PhD, MS

Research Assistant Professor Department of Medical Social Sciences Northwestern University

As a personality, development, and health psychologist, Dr. Dworak's research focuses on the role of individual differences (personality traits, cognitive ability, and interests) in predicting and contributing to lifespan development of cognitive, emotional, health, and everyday outcomes. This work is complimented by her efforts as a psychometrician and statistician to develop, adapt, validate, and implement patient-reported outcomes and cognitive performance measures for various pediatric and adult populations and special clinical conditions.

Emily Ho, PhD

Research Assistant Professor Department of Medical Social Sciences Northwestern University

Dr. Ho is a quantitative psychologist specializing in the development and validation of performance measures as well as behavioral decision-making. She has prior experience at The College Board working on psychometric validation of educational assessments, and is one of the scientific leads for the NIH Toolbox V3 norming project. Dr. Ho currently serves as the Data Core Lead on Advancing Reliable Measurement in Alzheimer's Disease and cognitive Aging (ARMADA) and the Site PI of a study to validate an olfaction performance measure for the detection of COVID-19 in a community sample collected through Northwestern Medicine. Her work has been published in leading journals such as Nature Climate Change, Psychological Assessment, Management Science, Quality of Life, and Alzheimer's and Dementia. In 2018, she was internationally recognized as a Rising Star of Behavioral Insights by the Behavioral Exchange.

Julie N. Hook, PhD, MBA, ABPP

Research Associate Professor, NIH Toolbox Product Manager, Department of Medical Social Sciences, Northwestern University

Dr. Hook is a Research Associate Professor and the NIH Toolbox® Product Manager in the Department of Medical Social Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. She is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist. Dr. Hook began her career as a clinician, researcher, and educator at Rush University Medical Center (Chicago, IL). She then worked in the commercial sector for 10 years. At Psychological Assessment Resources (PAR; Tampa, FL), she worked in R&D as a Product Director leading the development of large-scale psychological tests, and later as the Manager of Testing and Quality Assurance. While at Design Interactive (Orlando, FL), she led DoD funded projects focused on combining technology to improve healthcare assessment. In her current role, she contributes to NIH grant-funded research, and oversees the NIH Toolbox product portfolio including translations, training, and derivative products.

Aaron Kaat, PhD

Associate Professor, Department of Medical Social Sciences, Northwestern University

Dr. Kaat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University. He has a strong background in psychometrics and child development -- in particular intellectual, and developmental disorders (I/DD). His research program relates to measure development, adaptation, and validation in special populations using psychometrics and latent variable models. He is particularly interested in multiple-group item response theory (IRT), where the special populations may have a different distributional form than in the reference -- i.e., general -- population. At Northwestern, Dr. Kaat has emphasized psychometrics related to the instruments within the HealthMeasures suite (i.e. the NIH Toolbox, PROMIS, PROMIS Pediatric, Neuro-QoL, and ASCQ-Me).

Erica LaForte, PhD

Research Assistant Professor Department of Medical Social Sciences Northwestern University

Erica M. LaForte, PhD is an applied psychometrician with over 25 years of experience in clinical test development. Her primary research interests focus on the development and validation of tools for the measurement of cognitive abilities and achievement. She is currently a Research Assistant Professor in Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University, where she serves on the science team for the NIH-funded Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) study. In addition to her work on the NIH Toolbox, Dr. LaForte consults in the field of educational test development and is currently serving as a co-author for the fifth edition of the Woodcock-Johnson.
